Craig Colquhoun
As a toddler, Craig J. (HOSS) Colquhoun started beating on his Mom’s pots and pans with wooden spoons and has never stopped drumming.
His first teacher was Tom Currie, a Scottish Immigrant, living in Kincardine Ontario.
Tom taught Craig the basics of snare drumming and sparked his life long quest of being able to play “a drum roll that sounds like tearing paper”.
After 2 years of playing on wooden table tops with Kirkwood MB sticks, he moved on to play snare drum in the Kincardine Scottish at the age of 10.
When he was 16, Craig joined the newly re-formed Bruce County Pipe Band as a rhythm tenor drummer. Three years later, Bass drummer, Duncan Gibson, moved on to play with The Clan MacFarlane Pipe Band. As Craig was the tallest drummer in the corps, P/M Bill McLeod asked him if he would like to try the bass drum. Craig did, and has never looked back.
Craig has been the bass drummer for Bruce County Pipe Band, MacNish Distillery, ScotsAire, Toronto Transit, the 78th Fraser Highlanders and now The Spirit of Scotland.
During his 27 year bass drumming career he has won the North American Open Bass Prize 6 times, the Canadian, USA and Worlds Best Bass titles all three times.
Craig is Alumni of Conestoga College where he studied Mechanical Engineering as well as a Mohawk College Graduate of Jazz Performance under the tutelage of David James.
Craig is the founder of the Hosbilt Drum Company.
Today, Premier Music manufactures the Hosbilt range of bass and tenor drums for Pipe Bands all over the World.
Craig lives just north of Kincardine Ontario with his wife, Lisa, and 2 daughters, Annie and Marlena.
He is the lead training developer of Nuclear Operators for Bruce Power, where he has worked since 1989.
